I just finished reading “The Education of Little Tree” for the second time and I highly recommend it to people of all ages. Its charm lies in its point of view: an Indian boy sharing what he’s learned of the world around him through adventures with his Cherokee grandparents in the Tennessee mountains of Depression era America. We get the child’s impression of local characters, of bloviating politicians, of the illegal whiskey trade and of the casual prejudice of white people (which he often poignantly misinterprets). There are laugh-out-loud scenes, as when two bootleggers from the city undergo a hilarious hazing into the ways of the mountains. There are also tear-inducing scenes, as when Little Tree is taken from his grandparents by the heartless social work bureaucracy.

Through all of Little Tree’s adventures, the reader learns along with him. It’s a fun, touching and memorable journey. “The Education of Little Tree” is a wonderful book to share with friends of all ages. I’ve made a point of giving it to friends who are not big readers because it is so easy to read, and Little Tree’s adventures immediately draw them into the story. It makes reading fun and also conveys many important lessons about people, life and the natural world we inhabit. I love this book, and the movie they made from it is also outstanding.

I was please in getting another copy of 'The education of Little Tree' so I can share it with my Great Grandchildren. One of my children gave me my 1st copy when she shared it with her children. Thanks so much for providing an avenue where we can get copies of those things we have misplaced or lost!
One of my all time favorite books-a tale that grabs you from the first sentence and leaves you stunned and in reverence at the same time with its end.
Grandpa and Grandma were my "go to" guides for parenting with their loving presence and earthy teachings that rolled along over the landscape and times.
There was some controversy over whether this book was an authentic autobiographical account of Mr. Carter's childhood experiences or not-but it doesn't matter...this is a wonderful tale, with characters that sing with authenticity and the clarity of simple truths, and written from the perspective of a young boy-knowing somehow-that his life not only depended on-but was forever influenced through his time spent in the care of his grandparents.
My father gave me, my brothers and all his grand children this amazing story. I give it to boys and girls I come across in my volunteer work. Other reviews may tell you the story, I will tell you that will be a treasured addition to the collection of everyone who reads it. In a time of superficial fame and attention, this longtime favorite will last far beyond today's news and will be read over and over
Being half Cherokee and growing up in Eastern Tennessee this one hit me like I've never been before. The conversation between Little Tree and his Grandpa about how red foxes run in circles away from hunting dogs and how grey or silver foxes circle in a figure eight brought tears to my eyes because my Grandpa and me had the same conversation when I was about 7 or 8. My Grandpa was from the white side of my family but he was a mountain man and learned from a lot of people. He also made moonshine like the Grandpa in the book (which is a true story). In fact, my Grandpa had 7 stills going at different locations because of "them damn revenures", his words not mine.

Great book and I highly recommend it to anyone at any age.
This is a heart warming true look at our society and people in (even now) the Depression Era. I read this story before when I was a little one, and loved it then. And today. I laughed then and I laughed today, I cries then and I cried today. I especially enjoyed the Bull Frog. Just thinking about it now, big smile and laugher. This story is for all ages. Enjoy

used to be required reading before ww11. it's a beautiful story of a young boy growing up with his full blooded indian grandparents following the death of his parents and the reaction of society to him & vice versa. the life he had with his grandparents before the outside world interfered was a wonderful harmony of love & teamwork within a family in a time when diy was the norm as it was set in the depression. lessons of nature, nuture, racism, different beliefs, life skills, life thrills & realism as seen through a boys eyes.

Is one of those books that leaves you thinking when you are done about the souls of people rather than what you see on the outside and what is really important in life. I don’t care whether the author is really a Cherokee Indian or not, it is written well enough that it is believable and makes you relate to the main characters, even though you have little in common with them.
